Driving Directions to Izaak Walton Inn near Glacier National Park

The Izaak Walton Inn, offering lodging near Glacier National Park, is about an hour drive from Glacier International Airport.

  • Follow signs directing you to Columbia Falls and Glacier National Park.
  • Continue on HWY 2 past the town of West Glacier.
  • Essex is about 26 miles upriver at mile post 180 about halfway between East and West Glacier.
  • Turn right on Izaak Walton Inn Road and go approx half a mile to the Inn.

Getting to the Izaak Walton Inn by Rail on the Amtrak Empire Builder Train

About a quarter of guests at the Izaak Walton Inn arrive via Amtrak passenger train: the Empire Builder. We are the last flagstop station on the entire line due to our history tied to the railroad and our unique location.

Our inn gives people anywhere between Portland, Oregon and Chicago, Illinois a chance to experience rail travel as it once was with a stop in an outdoor hotspot near Glacier National Park.

Note that we will ONLY pick up guests from the Essex Amtrak Platform, and only with advance notice of arrival by train. The Izaak Walton Inn does NOT have any nearby rental car services. 

The Izaak Walton Inn cannot guarantee pickup or drop off to the Essex train platform. Weather permitting, transportation to the platform may not be available as our vehicle may not be able to access it. The Izaak Walton Inn & Companies are not responsible for missed trains, train delays, or weather related incidents involving the train. We offer this service as a courtesy and not a guarantee, guests are fully responsible for all travel related occurrences.

There are no rental vehicle, rideshare, or taxi services in Essex. The nearest rental vehicle services are in East Glacier (summer only), Whitefish, and Kalispell, Montana. If you are arriving by train and are looking for a rental vehicle, we recommend stopping at the Whitefish Amtrak Station which has rental vehicle services. We recommend booking a vehicle 6-8 months in advance of your arrival date.
